If you've been following the auto show circuit or automotive news lately, you've probably heard that diesel is going to be a huge force to be reckoned with in the fight against high fuel prices.

Overachieving German automaker Audi is setting yet another standard with their new TT 2.0 TDI model lineup. They've taken the standard TT coupe and roadster models and installed an available two-litre diesel engine with 170 horsepower and nearly 260 lb.-ft of torque. Audi says that the TT TDI is the first series production sports car to be motivated by a diesel engine.

The benefits include a broad torque band and reduced fuel consumption- as low as 5.3 litres / 100km. Drivers can expect 0-60 in the 7.5 second neighborhood. Quattro all wheel drive is installed to all diesel-powered TT models, helping make the best use of their bountiful torque. Audi stresses that the diesel engine runs smooth and quiet- thanks to extensive use of noise and vibration cancelling features. A six-speed manual transmission with short-throw shift action is standard.

No word yet on whether the TT TDI will come to our shores.
