Awards are always meant to help those who are looking for the best of the best in any walk of life. You've got the Oscars, the Pulitzer Prizes and the Grammys. The role of these organizations is to let you know that, by popular vote, these are the actors, movies, artists and writers you should consider paying attention to.

Our Awards are the same, but for cars. Team Auto123.com consists of 10 jury members who have a combined 395 years of experience... OK, I'm exaggerating, but you won't find a brand spankin' newbie amongst our ranks, nor will you find someone who started their career test-riding horse-drawn carriages. We've got a well balanced mix of enthusiasts, responsible family people, mechanics, performance drivers, a Prairies inhabitant, and everything in between. Seven boys (not men, who are we kidding?) and three women make up those who ultimately name the winners.

These winners are picked amongst all – yes all – cars sold and available in Canada up to a few days before we announce the finalists. This then means that the same car could potentially win two or more years in a row. Makes sense doesn't it? If it's the best in the segment, why would it not repeatedly win?

Truthfully, though, even if we name one car to be the best of the best in a given category, it does not necessarily mean that it is the optimal car for you. Colin Firth may not be your favourite actor. You may also find Arcade Fire's “The Suburbs” not “pop” enough for you. Right?

Thing is, if you're in the market for a new music record or movie to buy, Colin Firth and Arcade Fire's work would be a very good place to start. The same goes for cars.

Last year, we named the Ford Fiesta as the best subcompact car. This category has literally transformed itself into an “I want” segment from a “this is all I can afford” category. In the last 12 months, new players have been added and the war rages on. The Fiesta is an amazing car, but you may find the trunk too small, however, the drive is equal to no other. Someone else will pick the Honda Fit because of its increased versatility. You see what I'm getting at?

I often hear people criticize these types of awards as being biased, and they'd be right. Because we subjectively select the winners through a series of awarded points, we are essentially picking our favourites. That's the idea behind the whole operation: We're the pros, and this is what we think.
