American company Kelley Blue Book recently gave out its annual awards to the makes and models that have the best resale value in 2018. Historically, KBB’s projections have proven to be highly accurate and reflective of the actual used-car market.
It’s a sobering figure: the monetary value that a new vehicle loses in depreciation during the first 60 months of ownership is greater than the cost of fuel, maintenance or car insurance. Whether you plan on selling your new car after only three years or keep it for a decade, it’s definitely worth taking into account the potential resale value of their new-vehicle purchase.
For a second consecutive year, Toyota is the mainstream manufacturer with the best resale value for its vehicles, while Porsche takes top honours among luxury carmakers. Toyota’s strong performance rests on the widely recognized reliability and durability of its vehicles, while Porsche is simply unmatched in terms of the cachet and performance capabilities of its cars.
Looking at the overall top 10, across all categories, SUVs and trucks once again dominate the list – the only car that sneaks in among them is the Subaru WRX. While on average, vehicles overall retain around 33% of their new-car value after 60 months, the models on this list retained between 46% and 61% of their value.
