Japanese automaker Nissan just announced that it will sustain considerable losses for the third quarter of the 2008 fiscal year. The losses total a little over 1.11 billion dollars. Nissan reports that the situation is mostly due to the economic downturn as well as the negative effect of the Japanese yen exchange rate, sagging consumer confidence and the difficulty consumers have obtaining credit.

This poor performance exceeds even the most pessimistic estimates made by Nissan's managers. Nissan sold 731,000 vehicles during the third quarter, an 18.6% decrease. This was the worst period for Nissan, as during the first nine months the manufacturer posted only a 3% decrease worldwide compared to last year.

By the end of the 2008 fiscal year, on March 31, 2009, Nissan will have launched eight new products across the globe, in addition to the four others introduced during the third quarter, the NP 200 in South Africa and the KIX mini SUV, the Cube and the Fairlady in Japan.
