BMW is reportedly developing customizable LCD gauges that will be featured in the 5 and 7 Series models within 2 years.
Along with « basic » gauges displaying speed, rpm, fuel level and engine temperature, the driver will also be able to add information depending on the mode.
Comfort mode will add navigation, infotainment and telematic data to the mix. Sport mode will include gear indicators and various driver-centric information.
According to a BMW engineer, the German manufacturer “doesn’t want to rely on digital representations of analogue gauges” and “is looking at the display as a blank canvas”.
Customization options won’t be exhaustive, however, as the automaker is looking to create a user-friendly solution.
BMW competitors, such as Mercedes-Benz (S-Class) and Jaguar Land-Rover (XJ, Range Rover), currently offer similar systems.
