BMW has just announced the addition of two cabriolet variants to its upcoming 1-Series lineup. Both models will be powered by one of BMW's legendary inline six-cylinder engines mated to a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox.

The 1-Series, and its cabriolet counterpart, are available in two models: the 128i and 135i. The 128i is motivated by a 3.0 litre, 230 horsepower engine which the German automaker says provides both rewarding performance and unmatched fuel efficiency.

The 135i comes with BMW's award-winning 3.0 litre, twin turbocharged engine with 300 horsepower, endowing the car with fantastic performance and excellent mileage figures as well.

The high-performance 135i comes standard with sports suspension, 18" wheels and an enhanced aerodynamics package as part of its list of upgrades intended to keep with the car's sporting intentions.

The convertible top is made of fabric, and can open or close in 22 seconds, storing in the trunk when not in use.

Optionally available is a world first: a top made to shine. It's constructed of a special fabric with woven with silver metallic fibres to create an iridescent effect in sunlight.

More details and pricing are expected before the 1-Series cabriolets go on sale in the second half of 2008.
