Hybrid vehicles are all the rage these days and the war on gas guzzling is on, but BMW has nonetheless decided to retire the ActiveHybrid X6.
Spokesperson for BMW North America Dave Buchko confirmed that production of the crossover has stopped, and the company currently has no intention of updating the technology or offering the X6 in another hybrid format.
In Canada, the vehicle motivated by a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 coupled with two electric engines powered by lithium-ion batteries is sold from $99,900 and burns 14.8 L/100 km.
At the time of its launch, at the end of 2009, it was hailed as the most potent hybrid on the planet – but it proved relatively thirsty.
Considering the fact that the Xdrive35i version ($66,650) and its V6 engine sipped 10.2 L/100 km and the M model ($100,900) consumed just 14.8 L/100 km while punching out 555 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, consumers never really saw the point of the ActiveHybrid X6.
The news does not signal the end of BMW’s green efforts, however. The automaker will be unveiling a hybrid 5 Series in the near future and continue working on electric vehicles, a technology for which BMW has high hopes.
