We've seen International Car of the Year Awards, though where powertrain prowess is concerned, it's the International Engine of the Year awards that gets the attention of gearheads around the globe.

Categorized and rated by a diverse panel of journalists from various countries, the International Engine of the Year Awards are intended to recognize every-day excellence in powerplants that offer the best driveability, performance, economy, and refinement. Eleven categories produced eleven winners, split up by displacement and purpose.

Toyota's 1.5 litre hybrid engine, as found in the Prius, took home the trophy for Green engine of the year. In this category, the engine had to have been designed with fuel efficiency as a priority. Toyota also took home the prize for sub 1-litre engine, with their three-cylinder engine from the Aygo, Yaris, Echo and Vitz.

Volkswagen's unique 1.4 litre twin-charged engine uses a turbocharger and a superchager to ensure low-end torque and mid-range power, and took first place for the 1 to 1.4 litre displacement category. The engine is fitted to several of the automakers vehicles, though it's not available in our market.

Up the scale, BMW's 1.6 litre turbocharged engine from the Mini Cooper S and Cooper S Clubman models smoked the competition in the 1.4 to 1.8 litre category. Volkswagen's two-litre turbo engine topped the competition in the larger 1.8 to 2.0 litre catrgory- though both engines represent a trend towards small but potent powerplants that deliver an ideal blend of power and efficiency.

From green to mean, a tight battle between Japan, Italy and Germany erupted before Porsche took home top marks for their 3.6 litre, 530 horspeower turbo engine, which is available in the 911 Turbo and GT2. The first place ranking saw the powerplant narrowly beat out the BMW 8 and 10 cylinder 'M' powerplants, a Ferrari V12 and Nissan's new twin-turbo V6.

Other winners included Subaru's 2.5 litre boxer turbo engine from the Forester and Impreza, as well as BMW's three-litre twin-turbo engine which is available in the 1-Series, 3-Series, 5-Series and X6. BMW also took home an award for best engine in the 3 to 4 litre class for its new 413 horsepower M3 V8, and another trophy was awarded for the 500-plus horsepower V10 motivating the M5 and M6.

Finally, BMW group's two-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, available in the 123D model, took the coveted Best New Engine of 2008 Award. Talk about cleaning house!
