Time was, a corner of the VIP transport segment was devoted to producing a very high-profile rolling fortress, designed to ward off ideas of attack in part by dint of an aggressive look.
That trend appears to have been replaced by an opposite approach, one focused on discretion. BMW has introduced its new interpretation of executive security with the Concept 7 Protection. The specialized plug-in hybrid study is engineered to defend against street-level violence without drawing unwanted attention.
Stealth and comfort
Designed for corporate executives, public figures and private buyers seeking peace of mind in urban environments, the vehicle prioritizes stealth and everyday comfort over heavy military-grade bulk.

Design of the BMW Concept 7 Protection
To the untrained eye, the Concept 7 Protection is completely indistinguishable from a conventional production BMW 7 Series. But beneath its factory sheet metal lies a hardened security structure built to the new BayB civilian protection standard.
The vehicle’s defense system relies on a multi-layered material strategy targeted at common handgun ammunition, including 9×19 mm and heavy .44 Magnum rounds more typically associated with carjackings or road-rage incidents. Features include:
Concealed Ballistic Materials - Strategic integration of high-strength ballistic steel and fibre-reinforced composites within the doors, pillars, and structural body joints.
Thickened bullet-resistant glass - Significantly thicker security glass replaces standard glazing across all windows, with additional protective elements hidden behind interior trim for the rear quarter glass.
Armoured sunroof structure - To maintain the factory exterior roofline, the standard panoramic glass roof remains in place, backed by a protective steel-and-composite shield positioned directly underneath (keeping the interior sunshade permanently closed).
Secure communications - An integrated exterior intercom allows occupants to converse with people outside while doors remain locked, complemented by power windows with deliberately restricted opening ranges.
Unlike heavy-duty alternatives such as the BMW 7 Series Protection VR9, built to withstand explosions and military rifle fire under VPAM standards, the Concept 7 Protection focuses strictly on handgun-level defense.

Powertrain of the BMW Concept 7 Protection
To ensure the weight of the ballistic materials does not compromise escape capability or driving dynamics, BMW outfitted the concept with the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the M760e xDrive. It’s anchored by a 3.0L TwinPower inline-6-cylinder engine working in tandem with an electric motor, along with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. System output is given as 603 hp.
The additional mass of the protection gear entailed some retuning of the chassis, braking system and driver assistance software. BMW didn’t provide details regarding curb weight and electric-only range figures, but said the gasoline-electric powertrain guarantees rapid acceleration and immediate torque output when escaping dangerous situations.

Interior of the BMW Concept 7 Protection
Inside, the concept preserves the flagship luxury expected of the 7 Series badge. Swathed in BMW Individual Smoke White Merino leather, Alcantara trim, and an anthracite headliner, the cabin serves as a serene sanctuary.
Rear-seat passengers benefit from an exclusive Individual centre console featuring a folding work table, wireless smartphone charging, and a refrigerated compartment—a feature set slated to arrive on standard production 7 Series models in the second half of 2027.
Production outlook
While categorizing the BMW Concept 7 Protection as a design study, BMW indicates that it previews a potential production expansion for its protection vehicle lineup, with European markets slated to receive priority if it gets that far.
