Car magazine says BMW is poised to take advantage of the Z4’s positioning as a high-end product to launch the Z2, an accessible (financially speaking) soft-top roadster designed to replace, simplify and purify the defunct Z3.
The new car would be taking on the MX-5, which has been dominating the segment for several years now. The president of the German marque, Norbert Reithofer, is reportedly not too thrilled with the idea, but his board of directors firmly believes in not giving in and letting Mazda get away with it.
Currently, BMW’s engineers are not sure if the Z2 will feature an all-wheel- or rear-wheel-drive system, but it’s unlikely that a front-wheel-drive solution will be chosen.
BMW will offer a choice of three four-cylinder gas engines generating between 170 and 272 hp. It also looks like a 2.0-litre, turbodiesel mill producing between 184 and 204 hp will be available. Odds are the latter won’t make it over to North America, though.
