Online magazine Auto Car has it from an anonymous source that the Megacity, the small, carbon fibre, electric hatchback developed by BMW, will be expensive, and buyers should expect to pay more for it than the Nissan LEAF.

And at 28,350 euros (about CDN$ 37,200), without government incentive programs, the LEAF isn’t the most affordable car on the block. The informer stated that “BMW is a premium product and electric mobility will not be cheap”. He noted, however, that the German manufacturer predicts technological advances will eventually lead to a drop in prices.

The Megacity is built on a rustproof aluminum chassis and equipped with a sturdy electric engine mated to a single-speed transmission, which means the battery will have a fixed lifespan. Using half the parts of a conventional vehicle, the Megacity will be faster and cheaper to manufacture.

BMW still hasn’t decided if the avant-garde Megacity will make it to Canadian shores.
