German car manufacturer BMW is tipped to return in the DTM championship next season.
German magazine Focus reports that BMW and the promoter of the DTM series ITR are in close discussions to strike a deal for the coming season.
Since 2006, Mercedes and Audi are the only two carmakers involved in the DTM championship. Both constructors are working closely with ITR on a new set of rules, in order to welcome new makes.
ITR is considering to implement some sort of unified GT rules, and there are already in talks with the organisers of the Japanese GT championship and American Grand-Am championship.
BMW, which already runs M3 GTs in ALMS and LMS championship, would then have a great opportunity to join the DTM next season. BMW competed in the DTM series in the 80s, with Roberto Ravaglia winning the title in 1989.
If BMW would confirm their return to the DTM, it would also mean that the German car manufacturer would leave the WTCC.
