The new BMW M3 is no longer a secret. It's coming soon, and it's got a new V8 engine and performance that's going to be hard to match.

But the high-performance version of the 3-series coupe will be competing against itself in the sales arena for this generation. BMW says that in each generation of the M3, they've been successful in increasing sales figures.

During its lifecycle, BMW sold 18,000 units of the first-generation M3, which was introduced in 1986. It sold 72,000 units of the second-generation M3 that was built between 1992 and 1999, and then went on to sell over 90,000 copies of the third-gen car which dropped from the model roster last year. For the fourth-generation machine, they want to break the 100,000-unit mark.

"With every new model, we want to offer a better product and sell more," said Carsten Pries, product manager of BMW's M division, which specializes in high-performance cars. Backing up his claim is a significant increase in power, alongside a reduction in weight and fuel consumption from the previous model.
