Production workers for sports car builder TVR must be absolutely crushed. After hopes were raised and some laid-off workers rehired, the company said that it will end production at its Blackpool plant as operations are sourced overseas. The stoppage will see 260 jobs lost at one of Britain's only remaining independent automakers.

"We are extremely sorry that, after a period of uncertainty and raised hopes that we could continue production ourselves in Blackpool, we have had to make this decision," Nikolai Smolensky said in a statement.

The son of a wealthy Russian banker, Smolensky purchased the company in 2004. "We need to secure the future of the company and move it forward. I am afraid we see no other way to do so" he added. Staff had been told in April that the company was hopeful production would remain local.

TVR has been around nearly 60 years and survived through eras that saw other performance car manufacturers go bust. The brand is known for its aggressive and dramatic looks, potent engines and a growing reputation among celebrities.

TVR workers aren't alone. Over 2000 jobs will be lost next year when Peugeot closes its plant in Ryton this January.
