Hi everyone!
Boy, time really flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday that we finished the 2009 DTM season in Hockenheim. While my personal schedule has gotten lighter since then, there hasn’t been a single boring moment as far as I can tell!
For the first time in my life, I visited the Middle East. Mercedes-Benz sent me to Abu Dhabi for a little marketing operation with AMG customers from all over this part of the globe, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait, etc. I was to take them for a ride on a racetrack for a couple of days.
I landed in the UAE capital on the night of Friday, November 20. I had Saturday off as "work" would only begin on Sunday. I played a round at the magnificent Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which is set to host an international tournament in January.
When I finally headed to the Yas Marina Circuit, I discovered a beautiful venue featuring exceptional infrastructures. We only used part of the track that served for the Formula One Grand Prix in October, more precisely the Northern section, which is about 3-kilometre long and really fun to race on. It consists in a first straightaway in front of the pits, followed by a left-right combination, the hairpin turn inside the North Grandstand, another straightaway and a couple of corners back to the start/finish line.
After the event, I had the opportunity to tour the entire racetrack, including the Southern section that runs across the marina. Wow! I sincerely hope that the DTM Championship will hold a race here some day.
My car was none other than the wonderful, track-ready C63 AMG Performance powered by a 6.3-litre V8 engine. I got the AMG guests initiated to the exhilarating thrills of race car driving.
This overall experience proved to be extremely positive for me. While I didn’t have much time to visit the area, I was able to see just how big urban development is in Abu Dhabi. An incredible number of buildings and complexes are under construction. Some locals told me that everything is expected to be completed within the next 15 years or so. Amazing!
