Cadillac has had an incredibly busy week, confirming the production of the ELR and unveiling the Ciel concept, reminiscent of the Caddies of yore while stylishly revealing what the future has in store for us.

Powered by a hybrid system using a direct injection, twin-turbo V6 and a lithium-ion battery battery, the open-top car is about 12 inches longer than the CTS sedan and seats four.

With its blood red paint job and 22-inch wheels behind which ceramic brakes peek out, the Ciel is an exercise in luxury that incorporates unique Cadillac design cues (the grille, for instance) as well as modern touches such as rear suicide doors. Take away the door handles and throw in LED head- and taillamps, and you get one gorgeous machine.

The cabin is simple yet richly appointed. The instrument cluster is minimalist, the vents are mostly well concealed and the gauges offer digital and analog readouts.

Additional interior features include a power-assisted shifter that deploys when the engine is started and “connectivity portals” for all occupants, allowing them to keep in touch with the outside world.

However, it’s the choice of materials, including Italian Olive wood, machined aluminium and premium leather in warm hues, that truly create a sense of prestige and adventure.
