GM's engineering centre in Oshawa Ontario is set to play a major engineering role in the conversion of over 100 Chevrolet Equinox fuel-cell vehicles which will be delivered to drivers in the fall of 2007. The drivers are

from a variety of different backgrounds in various geographical areas, and the test- called "Project Driveway"- is the first meaningful market test of fuel-cell vehicles anywhere. The information collected will be used to tailor future product offerings and ensure acceptance in the marketplace.

The cutting edge crossovers run on GM's fourth-generation fuel-cell propulsion system and produce zero emissions. They will be delivered to customers in a few major US metropolitan areas where hydrogen fueling is feasible. The fuel-cell equipped models will be converted at GM's regional engineering centre, while cold weather testing is set to take place in Kapuskasing, Ontario.

The Equinox is presently built in Ingersoll, and is the first vehicle to have been lead engineered and built in Canada, GM says.

propulsion area. Fuel-cell vehicles have no emissions, and are said to be smoother, quieter and more exciting than machines with conventional engines.

"Ontario has worked hard to support and encourage leading-edge investments in our automotive industry," said Joseph Cordiano, Minister of Economic Development and Trade. "GM is leading the way in fuel cell technology which will result in benefits to the environment and build on the province's strengths as an innovative economy."
