In his talk to the students, Paul said he would revisit some of the conversations that took place within the HMI team… How team members were cognizant that there couldn't be technology, just for technology's sake… And how they determined that it was their job to make worthwhile technology available to everyone, not just tech-savvy early adopters — and especially to someone who was also tasked with driving a car.
"Part of my speech will also touch on Moore's Law, which essentially states that there will always be more technology tomorrow than there is today… There will always be more technology wanting to get into the car… But human capability isn't really changing too much, we're stuck with our neurons… So the job of the human-machine interface is to create strategies to bring those technologies under the (human capability) line. And in a car it's even more critical. Under the line there is also this big task called driving."
But the saving grace of technology, according to Paul, is that technology also gives you the tools to manage those other technologies. The prime one for the vehicle moving forward will be voice command. How else, asks Paul, could you deal with thousands of songs on your music player and hundreds of numbers in your phone contact list?
"The stuff we're talking about today, MyFord and MyFord Touch is really about information to support that voice interaction."
Within five years, 80 percent of Ford vehicles will have a MyFord or MyFord Touch interface.
