An amendment to the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (MVSR) by the Canadian government may make it easier for Canadians to import newer vehicles from the USA.

The news comes after a record setting month of American vehicle imports as the strong Canadian dollar has shoppers looking south and Canadian dealerships scrambling to keep their showrooms busy.

The amendment to section 12 of the MVSR affects vehicles built after September 1st, 2007 which have an electronic immobilizer or can be fitted with one. Currently, regulations state that all cars, vans, light trucks and SUV's sold or imported into Canada must come with the system.

This regulation was in response to Canadians desire to reduce a trend of thefts, and to protect innocent parties from accidents involving stolen cars.

"Our government is committed to ensuring safety on Canadian roads and highways," said Hon. Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "This amendment will simplify and clarify the process for Canadians importing U.S. vehicles, to ensure those vehicles meet our requirements with respect to anti-theft immobilizers."
