Do you want a car, an SUV, a two-door, a convertible or maybe even a minivan? I'm still shocked with the amount of women who ask my advice and don’t (or maybe can’t) figure this out. It really can as simple as that when you start looking.

Do you want a manual or automatic, 5-speed or 6? How important are things like power windows and door locks, an adjustable steering column, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio or navigation? There will be some things you can't survive without. For me, it’s heated seats.

Remember to also consider things you do not want. This list will prevent the salesperson from trying to convince you to buy something you don’t really need or want. Gas-conscious shoppers may refuse to buy anything that gets worse than a specific posted fuel economy rating. You may be old-fashioned and refuse to buy anything but a manual transmission.

Make yourself three lists: Must Have, Nice to Have, and No Way. This is your list, so don’t let anybody change your mind or influence what you put under each category. Unless you are sharing this vehicle with some else, remember it will be you that will be driving it every day. It will be your bum in the seat and your hands on the wheel, so make sure you are happy.

Stay away from asking for too much help with these lists. Your best friend may detest driving a standard and do her best to convince you to agree with her. Or maybe the guy you've been dating for the last twomonths thinks that a young woman behind the wheel of a gas-guzzling, growling Hemi is the sexiest thing in the world.

Did I just lose you at Hemi? This is the part where I stress: If you don’t know what it is, find out!

My aunt recently bought a brand new car and was excited to show off the amazing CVT. She picked me up, and within minutes asked me what I thought. I asked her if she even knew what a CVT was; she replied, incredibly excited, “Yes! It’s the containable various transmission.”

After doing my best to not laugh (its actually called a Continuous Variable Transmission), I asked, “But do you know what it is and what it does?!”

Needless to say, she had no idea. The salesman told her she loved the smooth ride because of the CVT. This could be a very true statement, but this was one small area that my aunt was unsure about, and she didn’t even know why.
