When fuel injection first came into existence, a single fuel injector was placed at the front of the engines intake tract to allow more control over the amount of fuel used by the engine. That was some time ago, and the evolution of technology in this area has now made available something

called Direct Injection. Direct injection moves the fuel injectors right into the combustion chamber, just like a spark plug. This gives engineers an unprecedented level of control over the amount of fuel used, with power and economy benefiting as a result.

Two examples of direct-injection technology really impress. Audi and Mazda both utilize turbochargers and direct-injection technology to create plenty of power from small, four cylinder engines. Audi's 2.0 litre turbocharged engine generates over 200 lb. ft. of torque, while Mazda's 2.3 litre turbo mill creates nearly 275 horsepower. Both engines are versatile and achieve reasonable fuel consumption figures despite their output. Most impressive is their fat, wide torque curves which are available from very low RPM's.
