Descendants of Skunkworks
Since its inception in 2002, the Mopar Underground design team has completed several tuning projects in order to showcase the wide array of products offered by Chrysler's parts and accessories department. In this spirit, the team developed the Dodge SRT4, first commercialized in 2003.
Most of the concept cars developed by this team, formerly known as Skunkworks, have been unveiled at the SEMA Show over the past five years. Which is normal, as this is the premier automotive specialty products trade show, held every November in Las Vegas.
According to Ralph Gilles, the members of the design team, who often work on the projects after their normal workday, come from all of Chrysler's fields of activity. "It's the usual 'enthusiast' suspects from our union shops (plastic, paint, metal and wood), Product Design Office, SRT and Mopar Performance Parts and engineering. Every year, they push the boundaries of conventional thinking-customizing with no limits to creative expression and freedom, just the power to imagine," said Gilles.
