Only a few loose ends apparently remain to be tied up for the Canadian Auto Workers union to reach an agreement with Chrysler's executives concerning the reduction of labour costs in the country.

This reduction, proposed at $19 less per hour, is one of the conditions for Fiat to continue with the negotiations and for the Canadian government to accept to pay the billions Chrysler has asked for to continue its operations.

According to Reuters and the president of the CWA, Ken Lewenza, "only a few details still need to be hammered out. Nothing major, but the kind of thing we need to see in writing. Dots on the i's and crosses on the t's, so to speak," he explains.

Chrysler and its workers have only one week left to reach an agreement in order to benefit from the three billion dollars available in Canada. However, the agreement is also part of the company's viability plan, which the U.S. Congress is waiting for before it hands over the six billion dollars Chrysler needs to operate.

Once the agreement with Chrysler is complete, the CWA expects that it will need to sign the same type of agreement with the two other American manufacturers operating in Canada, GM and Ford. GM had already signed an agreement reducing labour costs by $7 per hour, but it was rejected and considered unacceptable by the other two auto giants.

A final decision should be taken in the next few hours.
