Chrysler HEMI crate engines leads performance parade

In order toanswer the needs of a wide range of its performance-happy customers,  Chrysler will soon start selling crateversions of its HEMI engines, a turbo upgrade for its Dodge SRT-4, and otherMopar bits.

For speed freaksenamored of the classic drag race, the big news is undoubtedly the first offour Hemi crate V-8s with what Chrysler likes to call ''Plug and Play'' installationconvenience. That would be the 5.7-litre version of Chrysler's famous V-8 brand,with 6.9, 7.7 and 8.7 iterations still to come.

Sport couperacing fans will appreciate the 3R Turbo Upgrade kit for the 2.4-litreinline-four in the front-drive SRT-4, since it boosts the power numbers to 310hp at 5,600 rpm and 325 lb-ft of torque between 3,200 and 4,800 rpm. When thekit is accompanied by the Mopar Performance Cat-Back Exhaust System and"Turbo Toys,'' the numbers go to 355 hp (with 100-octane fuel) at 5,200rpm and 365 lb-ft of torque at 3,200-4,800 rpm.

These particularMopar toys and many others are meant to meant to deliver ''authenticperformance parts and accessories to the most passionate automotiveenthusiasts,'' says Chris Cortez of Chrysler, and ''allow them to enhance andpersonalize their Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles.''

Offered inmulti-port injection (MPI) and carbureted versions, the Mopar 5.7-liter HEMIcrate engine features a cast-iron cross-bolted cylinder block with aluminumHEMI twin-plug cylinder heads, which has been modified to include an integrated''plug and play'' engine controller for easy installation into most vehicles.

The MoparPerformance 5.7-liter HEMI crate engine produces 360 hp at 5,700 rpm and 360lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm.

For the mostMopar power available in crate, consumers will want to consider the 8.8-litreversion, which comes carbureted, blown or show-polished and is good for 650 tomore than 900 horsepower, depending on engine configuration.

Mopar is alsointroducing all-new versions of the classic 6.9-litre HEMI, now producing 465 hpand 486 lb-ft of torque, the 7.7-litre HEMI, with 525 hp and 540 lb-ft oftorque, and the 8.7-litre HEMI, boasting 610 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.

Each of theseMopar HEMI crate engines include all-new components built to originalspecifications, and are delivered completely assembled, from the intakemanifold to the oil pan.

Along with theturbo kit for the SRT4, Dodge is selling a Stage 3R Damper Kit with the''serious club sport driver in mind, since it features independently-adjustablerebound and compression on each damper, while offering drivers their choice ofa range of spring rates, depending on the type of road racing or street use.

The MoparPerformance Stage 3R Damper Kit is offered as a set of shock absorbers similarto Mopar's Stage 2 and Stage 3 systems, but without springs. In order to allowthe driver to match the spring rates to the driving situation, MoparPerformance offers a variety of race springs for the Stage 3R kit.

Mopar is alsointroducing a new line of Mopar DUB Edition parts and accessories such as floormats, a chrome package, sill plates, lowering springs, a 76-mm performanceexhaust, and a special-edition Jacob & Co. diamond-studded clock for theChrysler 300C.
