The BMW M3 Sedan benefits from a strong reputation; the previous generations of this powerful model were pure thoroughbreds -- a bit unruly but immensely spectacular and rewarding.
For the new generation, the Bavarian automaker focused on creating a more balanced car. The M3 is now a little softer around the edges while making no compromises in terms of steering precision and engine output. The result is a highly-dynamic sedan that's easier to control yet equally competent and exhilarating.
With regard to 0-100 sprints, the BMW M3 was clocked at 5.65 seconds. Meanwhile, braking distances from 100 to 0 km/h averaged a mere 35 meters. Some of our test drivers, however, were frustrated with the inability to get the most out of the car at takeoff because maximum torque is available higher in the revband. Please note that the M3 was the only one to use a manual gearbox.
Beyond all-out power, we were most impressed with the car's surprisingly easygoing character and exceptional handling. At Sanair, this German superstar proved easy to handle while the steering offered clear feedback from the track.
Even better, a single, well-calculated pressure on the brake pedal allowed the car to fine-tune its trajectory with deadly accuracy, something we also noticed on public roads at lower speeds.
The cockpit of this BMW turned many heads, although not all of them had only positive comments to make. Fit and finish is decent, as are the various amenities and instruments, but the company's i-Drive multimedia system continues to irritate a number of people. Understanding and safely manipulating the main control knob and the multiple ancillary buttons requires extra attention and a delicate hand.
On the plus side, the seats in the M3 are a snug fit; they probably offer the best side support among the three cars.
Exterior styling is less successful. The bodywork lacks flair and does not match the sporty personality of the M3. In the end, our test drivers unanimously liked the overall balance and unparalleled thrills in sporty driving.
