NASCAR driver Robby Gordon took a surprise victory in the 4th stage of the prestigious Dakar rally in South America at the wheel of his mighty Hummer.

Gordon captured victory, beating Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel by just one second. For Gordon, it was his third stage win at the Dakar, and his first this year.

That stage from Flambala to Copiapo was delayed and shortened by 40 km, and was completed in one hour and 40 minutes, as the competitors crossed the Andes.

Peterhansel finished second to extended his lead of the event. Peterhansel, a nine-time Dakar winner, finished over two minutes ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah in the quickest of the Volkswagens.

The first leader of the event, Spaniard Juan Roma (BMW) retired.

Wednesdays stage will take the competitors from Copiapo to Antofagasta over 670km though the gold and copper mines.
