Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen) won the 6th stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally-RAID, and increases his advantage on top of the overall classification.

The Spaniard was only nine seconds quicker than teammate Nasser Al Attiyah as he reached the city of Arica, Chile, near the Peruvian border.

Meanwhile, Stephane Peterhansel (BMW) was quite unlucky. The Frenchman, who had been battling with both Volkswagen drivers since the beginning of the race, lost several minutes after he suffered four punctures. He dropped down almost fifteen minutes behind Sainz in the standing.

Saturday is a day of rest for the drivers. The race will resume on Sunday when the cars will cross the Atacama desert from North to South, to reach the city of Antofagasta.

The only Canadian driver registered in the event, Conor Malone (Chevrolet Sierra 500) was forced to retire in the 5th stage.

Provisional standing after six stages:
1. Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen) in 20h39m41s
2. Nasser Al-Attiyah (Volkswagen) + 2m42s
3. Stephane Peterhansel (BMW) + 14m51s
4. Giniel de Villiers (Volkswagen) + 31m09s
5. Krzysztof Holowczyc (BMW) + 1h13m19s
6. Mark Miller (Volkswagen) + 1h35m53s
Etc.
