Dakar: Defending champion Carlos Sainz extends his lead on Day 2

Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen) took his second stage win in the second day of the 2011 edition of the Rally-RAID Dakar, on Tuesday, and extended his lead to 3’05 over Stephane Peterhansel’s BMW.

His teammate Nasser Al-Attiyah took the second position, one minute behind Sainz, but he still stand in 3rd place in the overall standings, just behind Stéphane Peterhansel’s BMW, who secured third place.

Giniel de Villiers (Volkswagen) took 4th place, while the fourth VW Touareg, driven by Mark Miller lost one hour in an accident. The American was nevertheless able to reach the finish line.

After he suffered brakes troubles on Sunday, Guerlain Chicherit took 7th place with his Mini All4 Racing on Tuesday, and moved up to 23rd in the provisional standing.

Robby Gordon suffered from mechanical problems on his Hummer. He lost 30 minutes and dropped down to 21st in the standing.
