Dakar: Nasser Al-Attiyah closes in on race leader Carlos Sainz

Nasser Al-Attiyah managed to win the 9th stage of the famous Dakar raid on Monday and cut down again on Carlos Sainz’s overall lead.

Al-Attiyah led a Volkswagen Touareg sweep on Monday’s stage, claiming his third stage victory of this year's event in the 338-km special from Copiapo to La Serena.

Former World Rally driver Carlos Sainz of Spain arrived home in second place, almost six minutes behind his teammate.

Al-Attiyah’s victory reduced the gap to race leader Sainz to less than nine in the overall standings.

Last year's winner Giniel de Villiers, also driving a Volkswagen was third today.

Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit (BMW) finished fourth ahead of American driver Mark Miller in another Volkswagen Touareg.

American Robby Gordon was 12th today in his Hummer and now ranks 12th in the overall standings.

The events will end on Saturday January 16th, in Buenos Aires.
