Daytona 24: 17-hours in, Juan Pablo Montoya and crew leading race

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya and his celebs team composed of Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti and NASCAR rival Jamie McMurray was leading the 17th hour of racing at Daytona International Speedway on board of their No. 02 BMW Riley of Chip Ganassi Racing.

Ironically, another former Formula 1 drivers / NASCAR affiliates team was running in second place, 2.647 seconds behind the No. 02 crew. A.J. Allmendinger and Justin Wilson’s No. 6 Ford Dallara was in second place. They codrive the car with NASCAR driver Michael McDowell.

Series defending champions Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas were third, 4.128 seconds behind the leaders. They share the wheel with Graham Rahal and Joey Hand this week-end.

Hollywood actor Patrick Dempsey was part of the leading team in the GT division as the race approaches its final hours. Dempsey and teammates Joe Foster, Charles Espenlaub and Tom Long were 14th overall on board of their No. 40 Mazda RX-8 of Team Dempsey Racing.

The No. 67 Porsche GT3 Cup of Steven Bertheau, Brendan Gaughan, Wolf Henzler, Andy Lally and Spencer Pumpelly was a full lap behind their class leaders, in 15th place overall.

Quebecker Jean-François Dumoulin’s Ferrari never fully recovered from Friday night’s incident when one of his rookie teammates crashed the car.

The Ferrari had been in the pit since the half-race after several other shorter visits before. The car was sitting in 43rd place overall at the 17th hour, 228 laps down from the DP leaders.

Meanwhile, the caution period that waved this early morning, near 5:30 am, was the 16th of the race so far. It ran all the way to the 15th hour before the race could resume.
