The pole position and 12 first spots on the 48th Daytona 24 grid were determined yesterday afternoon at the famous Daytona International Speedway.

Last year’s vice-champion Max Angelelli will lead the pack Saturday with a fourth Rolex pole thanks to his lap in 1:40.827.

Ozz Negri and teammate Michael Valiante completed the top-three in Prototype as the second, third, fourth and fifth positions were separated by only 0.064 second.

Scott Dixon and Scott Pruett respectively took the fourth and fifth spots. Rounding up the top 10 were Christophe Bouchut, Darren Law, Joao Barbosa, Ricardo Zonta and Buddy Rice.

Jimmie Johnson got a scare in the opening practice session on Thursday as he badly damaged the #99 GAINSCO Chevrolet Riley he shares with Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty and Jimmy Vasser.

Although qualifying the car was out of reach, the team will fix the car in time for the race. Johnson was unhurt in the incident.

In GT, Jeff Segal broke the track record set by Sylvain Tremblay last year. He recorded a time of 1:49.282 to beat his teammate for the pole.

In fact, Tremblay was beaten twice in the last lap of qualifying, falling to third position as Jordan Taylor recorded a lap of 1:49.371.

Paul Edwards qualified fourth in front of Andy Lally to round up the top-five qualifiers.

The second portion of the qualifying session will take place on Friday morning in Daytona. It will determine the other positions on the grid – only the 13 first spots were determined Thursday in prototype, and 20 first spots in GT.
