Companies offering incentives to graduates is nothing new in the Canadian car business, but traditionally it only applied to college and university students.

Now comes DaimlerChrysler Canada with an incentive plan called Focus on First-time New Vehicle Buyers that's directed to people currently in high school as well as college.

The MY RiDE! program is directed at young students who are ''currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from high school, college, university or CEGEP.'' The program applies to full-time high school students, and full-time or part-time college, university or CEGEP students.

Students from across Canada are eligible for a $500 incentive toward the purchase or lease of a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle, explains Mike Accavitti, the vice-president of marketing at DaimlerChrysler Canada.

''As a bonus,'' he says, ''they will also receive two no-charge oil changes and $100 in Mopar coupons redeemable on merchandise, maintenance items, appearance accessories or performance parts.''

In addition, ''eligible purchase financing buyers will be able to take advantage of a 90-day deferred payment plan.''

Accavitti says that the people at DaimlerChrysler Canada ''understand that many of today's young people, including high school students, regard the vehicle they drive as an extension of their individuality. Our new MY RiDE! incentive is meant to ease the financial burden on students who are, in most cases, buying their first vehicle. We realize how important it is to ensure their experience is a positive one if we want these consumers to come back to a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealership for future vehicle needs.''

Accavitti says the Windsor-based firm currently has seven vehicles that might be of particular interest to recent grads and first-time buyers because they all carry MSRPs under $20,000. They include Dodge SX2.0 for $12,998, Chrysler PT Cruiser for $15,998, Jeep TJ for $18,998, Chrysler Sebring Sedan for $18,998, Dodge Caravan for $19,998 and Dodge Dakota for $19,998.

The MY RiDE! program is in effect from until July 5, 2005, says Accavitti, ''and all new 2004-2006 model year vehicles purchased or leased within the program period are eligible for the incentive, with the exception of Dodge Sprinter.''

The four-year eligibility period will be measured from the date indicated on the graduate's diploma. All eligible customers must be Canadian residents.
