E85 fuel is a source of power for some automobiles that has the industry buzzing about its viability to power more and more engines. Trouble is, it's availability as of yet is somewhat scarce- an unfortunate problem given its potential for dramatically lowered emissions.

The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) has announced a plan to implement the federal government's Renewable Fuels Strategy, including specific proposals to support and expand the availability of the fuel.

Vice President of corporate and environmental affairs David Paterson, says "we have millions of E85 FlexFuel vehicles on the road today, and when vehicles like our FlexFuel Chevrolet Impala run on E85, they have equal or better greenhouse gas performance than the smallest hybrids."

General Motors is a global leader in the technology, having sold over 2 million E85 ready vehicles in North America. The vehicles can run seamlessly on gasoline, E85 or any combination of the two from within the same fuel tank, offering environmentally concerned drivers added flexibility.

This year, the Chevrolet Impala won the Environmental Initiatives award from the CAA, while many of the carmakers larger vehicles, including full sized SUV's, are presently offered with the technology at no additional cost. Additional new models are to be fitted with E85 capability for 2007.
