Fisker Automotive is questioning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) methods for calculating the fuel economy and range of hybrid and all-electric vehicles after the EPA pegged their Karma at 4.5L/100km with an electric-only range of 51 km.
The manufacturer has since asked Europe's Technischer Üeberwachungs Verein (TÜV) certification agency to perform independent tests and the results are quite different.
According to the TÜV, the Fisker Karma achieves a rating of 2.1L/100km and a range of 83 km.
The news will no doubt boost the company's image in the public eye while stirring an interesting debate. Some major automakers could follow Fisker's lead and ultimately force the EPA to revise their standards and methods.
