Jean Sage, the former sporting director of the Renault F1 team for many years in the '70s and the '80s, has died at the age of 68.

Sage began his competition career in rallying. Many years alter he and Gérard Larrousse set up a team which became known as Ecurie Elf-Switzerland. It turned into a Formula 2 team and ran Jean-Pierre Jabouille to the European title in 1976.

Larrousse moved on to Renault Sport in 1977 and he hired Sage to be the sporting director of the Renault F1 team, with Jabouille as the driver of the first turbocharged F1 car.

Sage stayed with Renault until 1987. He remained close to racing, as well as an active competitor in historic events. Jean Sage was a passionate Ferrari fan and collector.
