Buemi pressed hard on the brake pedal as usual. The STR5 generated some 5Gs of negative acceleration and both front suspensions sheared from the monocoque.

The car crashed into the barriers but Buemi was fortunately not injured.

An investigation by the team has concluded that the incident was caused by a front right upright failure, which was a new design introduced for this weekend's race.

Photo agency WRI2 took these photos of the accident.
