Autosport.com has announced that former Maserati grand prix driver Roberto Mieres passed away, aged 87.
As well as taking the start of 17 world championship races, Mieres also participated in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, as a sailor.
The Argentinian driver started racing at the age of 23, in 1947. Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari were the ones who convinced him to take up his driving from his native Argentina to Europe, where his career could flourish.
Meries made his world championship debut at the 1953 Dutch Grand Prix, and in 1954, took a career-best sixth place in the season's final standings.
In 1955, he raced for Maserati at the 24 hours of Le Mans, and decided at the end of the year to pursue a sportscar career in South America.
Throughout his grand prix career, he raced for Gordini, Maserati and himself.
