F1: Teams to use 'mini-KERS' at some races?

According to a report in the Spanish press, some teams may be planning a partial deployment of KERS systems in 2009.

The sports newspaper Marca claims that some teams have calculated that because the benefit of the energy-reuse technology will be limited at some circuits, it may be wiser not to use a heavy and fully-functioning KERS unit all of the time.

However, a scaled-back version of the technology - presumably lighter and smaller - might be fitted to the cars simply to provide an acceleration boost off the grid at the start of grands prix.

"That is something that could be done," Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali is quoted as saying.

Other sources indicate that computer simulations of the KERS demonstrate that it will be more efficient to use the power all around the lap and thus create a situation in which the cars exit the corners faster and thus carry the extra speed down the long straights. This may mean that the idea of a push-to-pass button will simply not materialise.
