According to Hamilton, who rode shotgun to give me a personal tour of the track, "After three and a half years of hard work and struggle, with lots of ups and downs, [the track] has finally come to fruition and we're really, really happy the way the whole circuit has turned out."
Extra effort was made to retain as many trees as possible. Aesthetically, it's gorgeous, but it's also challenging for a driver. On most corners, you can't look ahead to set the car up for the next curve. Many of the corners contain multiple apexes preceded by blind crests, and there's plenty of variety. The longest straightaway is 610 metres, there's 20 m of elevation change and some corners have been designed with as much as 6% camber banking.
Ultimately, this isn't a run-and-gun type of road course. With 23 corners on the larger outer loop, it will take a while for even experienced drivers to get a feel for the intricacies of Calabogie Motorsports Park's challenging circuit. Those who can link corners together in a smooth fashion will be rewarded.
"The whole idea of this event was not only to provide a fun day for potential clients, such as the manufacturers and dealers that are out here today, but also for our team to get handle on the logistics of putting on such an event when we go full tilt next year," said Hamilton, referring to the amount of interest he's received in groups wanting to book dates for 2007.
After a day experiencing Calabogie Motorsports Park firsthand, my advice would be to contact Hamilton, book early and book often.
