With the tightening of fuel consumption and emissions laws, automakers are doing everything they can to stay up to code, generally starting with their thirstiest models. Chrysler and GM have already done their diesel homework, leaving Ford behind with its aging technology.

This week, the Blue Oval presented the fruits of its colossal labour to modernize the 6.7-litre, V8 Power Stroke that motivates the Super Duty and F Series pickups. There’s only one way to describe the engineers’s accomplishment: astounding.

Thanks to improved piston design and the precise placement of fuel injectors and glow plugs, the new mill raises output from 350 to 400 hp and boosts torque from 650 to a monstrous 800 ft-lb.

Sure, it’s a powerful beast, but did they forget about fuel efficiency? The answer is no. Ford estimates the V8 will consume 20% less black gold, earning it the enviable title of best in class.
