New CAFE regulations are now official in USA

We talked about it last summer. The US Senate was considering the adoption of new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations. Recently, the House of Representatives passed an energy bill containing a 40-percent increase in fuel economy requirements by 2020 as well as an increase in the renewable fuel standard to 36 billion gallons per year by 2022. The CAFE language maintains the distinction between passenger cars and light-duty trucks, and targets combined average fuel economy of 35 mpg (6.72 L/100 km) by 2020. The new program would take effect with model year 2011.
