A new plant will be built on a 145-acre site in Tipton, Indiana in a joint venture between Chrysler and renowned German transmission builder Getrag.
This new plant will assemble a more fuel-efficient dual-clutch transmission that will replace the aging 4-speed automatic for Chrysler vehicles. Production is scheduled to begin in 2009 and its capacity is said to be of up to 700,000 transmissions a year.
The $530 million investment will employ in the vicinity of 1,050 Chrysler group workers represented by the United Auto Workers union.
This plant is part of Chrysler's $3-billion product plan set on developing more fuel-efficient powertrains and not to mention, meeting future federal fuel economy regulations.
