The new CAFE standards forcing automakers to achieve a corporate average of 54.5 mpg (4.3 L/100 km) by 2025 are starting to have an impact.

Following the announcement of a Ford-Toyota partnership earlier this week, General Motors announced the extension of its agreement with LG in a move to expand its number and types of electric vehicles.

In the past, LG supplied batteries for GM’s Chevrolet Volt and its European cousin, the Opel Ampera. However, the company will play a bigger role in the coming months and years.

The electronics giant from Korea will indeed have the opportunity to broaden its portfolio and expertise by participating in the development of other key components alongside GM engineers.

Will the Volt's technology continue to prevail or will all-electric cars such as the Cruze EV, a GM-LG creation that served as official commute car during last year's G20 Summit, emerge on the market?
