Three weeks ago, GM’s president and CEO, Dan Akerson, announced that the plug-in Cadillac SRX hybrid had gotten the axe, though he had been in favour of the project. He did say a similar initiative was in the works, just not a SRX. Apparently he wasn’t lying.

Dave Barthmuss, the group manager of GM’s environmental and energy division, hinted a few days ago that a plug-in hybrid crossover might be unveiled at the next Detroit Auto Show.

In answer to plugincars.com’s queries, the evasive manager said “it’s always great to spend January in Detroit”.

Talk about piquing our interest. We have absolutely no idea what the new product, based on technology very similar to the Volt’s, will look like.

Will the Equinox and Terrain, both very successful since their launch, soon come in more fuel-efficient versions or will the Volt family welcome a new member? It’s hard to say right now, but we will definitely be on the lookout for GM’s early 2012 offerings.
