Jamie Whincup and Sébastian Bourdais, aboard their No.88 Triple Eight Holden, took away the first win of the Gold Coast 600 weekend, held at Surfers Paradise in Australian V8 Supercars competition. Alexandre Tagliani and team-mate David Reynolds finished 19th.

You may have never heard of the likes of Jamie Whincup and David Reynolds, or of Garth Tander, Mark Winterbottom and David Wilson.

On the other hand, you probably know Tonio Liuzzi, Mika Salo, Christian Klein, Sébastien Bourdais, Alexandre Tagliani, Helio Castroneves, Stéphane Sarrazin, Jorg Bergmeister, Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus.

Which is exactly why the Gold Coast 600 is so special.

For the occasion, Australian V8 Supercars regulars are paired with a international driver, for a pair of 300km endurance races.

In the first of the two contests, Triple 8 Holden drivers Bourdais and Whincup followed suit from their pole position performance on Saturday morning, with a race win in the afternoon.

Their main rivals were Andy Priaulx and Craig Lowndes in the sister car, although the were forced to retire on lap 52. Their misfortunes allowed Mika Salo and Will Davison to take the runner-up spot. 0.3s adrift were third-place finishers Richard Lyons and Mark Winterbottom.

Ryan Briscoe and Garth Tander were also in the picture, until they were put out of contention by poor strategy.
