The GP2 Series will enter a new season this weekend as part of the Grand Prix of Spain in Barcelona. Several drivers have what it takes to capture the title.

Last year, German Nico Hulkenberg (whose career is managed by the famed Willi Weber, Michael Schumacher’s manager) clinched the title and was awarded with a seat at Williams F1 team.

Young Frenchman Jules Bianchi is the clear favorite this season. Bianchi is managed by no other than Nicolas Todt, the son of Jean, the former Ferrari boss. Bianchi is already part of the Ferrari divers development program and has tested a Ferrari F1 car last winter.

Bianchi is driving for the best team in the series (ART Grand Prix) but he was a bit disappointing this past winter when he competed in the GP2 Asia Series.

Other drivers to watch for include Italian Davide Valsecchi (reining GP2 Asia series’ champion), Belgian Jérôme d’Ambrosio who drives for the Renault F1 Junior Team, formerly known as DAMS, Giedo van der Garde, Sergio Perez, Pastor Maldonado, Charles Pic and Christian Vietoris.

The GP2 Series remains one of the best ways to make it to Formula 1. Past series’ champions include Nico Rosberg (2005), Lewis Hamilton (2006), Timo Glock (2007) and Nico Hulkenberg (2009).

Other current F1 drivers who honed their skills in the GP2 series include Luca di Grassi, Bruno Senna, Kamui Kobayashi and Vitaly Petrov.
