Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas led all but nine of the 84 laps' race disputed at Virginia International Speedway Saturday. It was a third consecutive victory in four races for the duo so far this season.
Burt Frisselle tried all that he could in the last restart with five laps to go, but he did not manage to pass Scott Pruett, who did "a heck of a job", said Frisselle who shared his ride with Canadian Mark Wilkins.
Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor finished third in their Ford Dallara. It was a first podium finish in career for Taylor.
Pruett and Rojas still lead the championship, increasing their lead to 21 points with this victory in Virginia. Ryan Dalziel and Mike Forest are second in the standing - they finished sixth Saturday.
Andy Lally, who took its 100th start in Virginia, allowed himself to celebrate this occasion with a win in the GT division. Leading the last 25 laps was enough for him to secure this win he shared with teammate Ted Ballou.
Jeff Segal finished 0.712 behind Lally, sharing this second place with teammate Emil Assentato and their Mazda RX-8.
Paul Edwards and Scott Russell completed this fourth GT podium of the season. It was a first podium for Russell, a world Superbike champion as well as five-time winner of America's leading motorcycle race, the Daytona 200.
Expected leaders Jordan Taylor (Todd Lamb) - with pole - and Sylvain Tremblay (Jonathan Bomarito) were caught in traffic after deciding to change driver on their second pit stop. They finished sixth and ninth respectively.
Segal and Assentato now lead the GT championship by three points on seventh-place finishers Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis.
The next race will take place at Lime Rock Park, on May 31st. There will be an official test day next Tuesday, April 27th, to which several teams have already confirmed their presence.
