Goodyear UltraGrip Ice WRT
Its design might date back a few years, but the UltraGrip Ice WRT (Winter Reactive Technology) tire remains one of the best choices on the market. Strangely, though this tire has been widely vaunted in the European press and been chosen best winter tire by German publication Auto Motor und Sport, beating out nine other products, it is largely overlooked by Canadian media outlets.
Granted, the technology is a little dated, but it’s still an excellent, affordable tire available in a wide range of sizes for most cars on the market. It’s also quiet, and it features relatively deep grooves that do a good job of evacuating water and slush. The tread design is modern and effective, and it doesn’t wear too readily. We’ve used this tire with great results on one of our own vehicles for a few years now.
Incidentally, Goodyear also owns the Dunlop brand of tires, which has less of a market presence in Canada. It does produce Winter Maxx et Winter Sport tires for specific vehicle types. We recommend that in the case of Dunlops, you visit a specialized retailer.
