“J.K. (Vernay) has been quick on the road courses all year so it’s by no stretch going to be easy (winning in Toronto),” said Hinchcliffe.

“They have a good package and we have a good package, so it just comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes.”

Hinchcliffe had a best lap of 1 minute, 6.8212 seconds (94.551 mph). Frenchman Vernay, driving the No. 7 Lucas Oil/CJ/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car, was 0.0569 of a second off the pace (94.470 mph).

“It’s also hot (88 degrees F), so it was a slippery mess out there. I don’t think the car is perfect yet. I think there’s time in it and time in me, and that first session doesn’t mean much but it’s a good way to start off the weekend,” Hinchcliffe added.

Martin Plowman in the No. 27 Automatic Fire Sprinklers Inc./KEP Printing car for Andretti Autosport (1:07.1033; 94.153 mph) was third quick.
