Sam Schmidt Motorsports and Dragon Racing have announced that Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung will have a chance to drive and earn a spot on the starting grid for the upcoming Indianapolis 500.
Last winter, the Renault Formula 1 test driver and Gravity-managed driver was invited by the former FAZZT Racing team to test a Dallara Honda Indy car without being able subsequently to find sponsorship to hire him.
Weeks later, the team was taken over by Sam Schmidt.
If he qualifies, Ho-Pin Tung will write a piece of history for the 100th running of the Indy 500 by becoming the first ever Chinese to take part in the May classic.
Schmidt is also entering its full-season driver Canadian Alex Tagliani plus Townsend Bell at Indy and partnering with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing on a car for Jay Howard.
